Sensitive and sympathetic

And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. Luke 7:12 (NKJV)

As Jesus came to the ancient City of Nain, He crossed paths with a funeral procession. A man had died, a man who happened to be the only son of a widow. It was a sad situation, and watch how Jesus reacts to it:

When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her… Luke 7:13 (NKJV)

God's Word says Jesus saw and had compassion on the man's mother. It's a simple statement but one that's filled with significance. In the midst of mourning, Jesus is sensitive to and sympathizes with hurting hearts. We see the same streak of sympathy at the grave of Lazarus:

Therefore, when Jesus saw her [Lazarus' sister Mary] weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. John 11:33 (NKJV)

The Bible doesn't say Jesus was troubled because His friend Lazarus had died. It specifically says He was troubled by the effect Lazarus' death had on his family and friends. Again, we see Him sympathizing and sharing in their grief.

If you've ever mourned the death of someone who was dear to you—a spouse, a parent, a childhood friend, or even a son or daughter, you know the value of what we see Jesus doing here. Words can't describe how much it means to have a sensitive and sympathetic soul on your side. Although supportive friends can't remove the grief entirely, they certainly lighten the load.

That's the kind of person Jesus was. He didn't run away or distance Himself from those who mourned. His heart connected with those who were hurting, not in a superficial way, but in a way that was deep and real. May we be the same way. May we be sensitive and sympathetic to others in their seasons of sadness.

Think About It…
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
