Eyes on eternity

"In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." John 14:2 (NKJV)

The more you read through the gospel accounts of Jesus, the more apparent it becomes that He had an eternal perspective. Christ was consistently looking ahead to another time, another existence, another world that far exceeded this one in every possible way.

He never allowed this life to block His view of the next. In fact, everything that had anything to do with His earthly experience was weighed and defined with the eternal experience in mind.

When He told His disciples that He was going to depart from them, He followed it up by adding that He was going to prepare a place for them in His Father's house (John 14:2). When He taught about fearing God over man, He pointed to the fact that man can only punish the body temporarily, while God has the power to punish eternally (Matthew 10:28). When Pilate asked Him about His status as a King, He replied that His Kingdom transcended earth (John 18:36). And when He willingly endured the shame of the Cross, it was for the eternal joy that it would secure (Hebrews 12:2).

All throughout His life, Jesus anticipated eternity and its resulting realities. Let the same be said of us. Let every thought, every act—let absolutely everything that pertains to our earthly existence—be measured and evaluated in light of eternity.

When we follow Christ's example in that way, the effect will be two-fold. On one hand, we'll stop wasting our time on the things of this world that don't really matter in the long run. And on the other hand, we'll invest our time in things that will result in reward in Heaven.

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. Colossians 3:2 (NKJV)

Think About It…
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
