When to worship
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Matthew 26:30 (NKJV)
The Feast of Passover was the central religious event for the Jewish people. In addition to the actual feast itself, there were several accompanying traditions that they observed. For instance, after partaking of the Passover meal, they would sing Psalms 113-118 together.
On the night before He was crucified, Jesus observed the Passover Feast with His disciples. Afterwards, they sang a hymn together as they made their way to the Mount of Olives. It is assumed by most Bible scholars that the hymn sung was the traditional Psalms 113-118.
Now, keep the context in mind here. Jesus was on His way to being arrested and crucified. He's on the verge of entering into the darkest chapter of His biography. And with the weight of the world's sin about to be unleashed on Him…He worships.
If there's ever an aspect of our Savior's life that we need to follow, it's this one. We need to be people of praise not just when things are going in our favor but also when things are at their darkest, just like Jesus was.
There's an unparalleled power in praise. When we direct our heart, our mind, our voice, and our soul to the Lord in the act of worship, it connects us to Him in a way like no other. Whether we feel like it or not, praise empowers and enables us to handle life's hardships, which is why we do well in worshipping the way Jesus did.
Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is…speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord… Ephesians 5:17-19 (NKJV)
Think About It…
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
