Sweeping statement
Love covers all sins. Proverbs 10:12 (NKJV)
Earth can be a very difficult place. It’s filled with sinners. And where there are sinners, there’s sin. There’s corruption, injustice, backstabbing, stealing, infidelity, abuse, torture, genocide, and the list goes on and on and on.
But as powerful as sin is, there’s something more powerful…love. Proverbs 10:12 unmistakably and unapologetically says, “Love covers all sins.†In other words, there’s no sin under the sun that can’t be overcome and eventually forgiven through the power of love.
In most of us, there’s an instinctive, “Yeah, but…†that wells up in response to such a sweeping statement. “Yeah, but you don’t know what someone once did to me. Yeah, but I’ve been wounded more deeply than you can ever imagine. Yeah, but the things I’ve been through are so horrible, so heinous, they can’t possibly be covered by love.â€
My point isn’t to minimize anything that may have happened to you. However, we minimize love’s power when we presume there’s any sin or combination of sins greater than love.
And while our love is often unable or unwilling to forgive sin, Romans 5:5 says God’s love is different. It is poured out on our lives by His Spirit, and it’s more than able to cover over anything that happens here on earth.
Yes, God’s love covers all sins, and if we ask for it, experience it, and extend it, we’re able to fully enter into what this Proverb is telling us. We don’t have to be bound or held captive by the sins that have been committed against us. The “Yeah, but…†disappears, because it’s overcome by something infinitely greater.
Think About It…
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
