Regard rebuke
Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains correction, but he who regards a rebuke will be honored. Proverbs 13:18 (NKJV)
To a certain extent, we can’t control what life holds for us. Things are going to happen that are completely beyond our command. Other people pursue their own agendas in ways that affect us, and the proverbial storms of life flair up. Often, we’re powerless against them.
But there are other aspects of our existence that we can control. Case in point: We can always control the way we respond to correction and rebuke. And the way we respond will have a huge impact on the rest of our lives.
It’s true. When someone “stiff-arms†correction and isn’t open to hearing how wrong or out of line they might be, it’s going to bring them to a place of poverty and shame. They’ll forge ahead in their pride without correcting what needs to be corrected. Eventually, it’s going to catch up with them, and their flaws are going to be exposed.
Yet those who regard rebuke, those who recognize they’re not perfect people and can stand to benefit from hearing what others have to say…these are the people who will experience honor. They’re going to be able to identify when and where they need to change, and as they make those adjustments, their character becomes more and more honorable.
Once again, a lot of life is beyond our control. But here’s something we always can control: We can control how we react when we’re corrected. And not only that, but when we react the right wayâ€"when we regard rebuke rather than reject itâ€"we position ourselves to experience honor instead of shame.
So exercise control over what you can control. Regard rebuke instead of being threatened by it. See it as an opportunity for change and attainment of an honorable character.
