Sow what?
The merciful man does good for his own soul, but he who is cruel troubles his own flesh. Proverbs 11:17 (NKJV)
Certain truths are profound in their simplicity, and that’s definitely the case with the one found in Proverbs 11:17. We’re told that the “merciful man does good for his own soul, but he who is cruel troubles his own flesh.†To put it another way, how you treat others is going to come back to you.
If you’re a man or woman of mercy, if you choose to forgive those who’ve wronged you, if you’re kind, gentle, and willing to give others a second chance, you’re setting yourself up for a good return. Your mercy is going to earn you a reputation that will cause others to want to be merciful to you.
On the other hand, if you choose to be cruel towards others, if you take the opportunity to kick people when they’re down, exploit their weaknesses, and walk over them in order to get ahead, you’re actually tearing yourself down. Your cruel character will cause others to “return the favor†when you’re down, which is bound to happen sooner or later.
The way you treat others is going to come back to you. It’s the timeless truth that we reap what we sow. Our behavior today will determine our treatment tomorrow. Applying this principle is obvious: We need to be men and women of mercy. We need to be known for forgiving others, being benevolent to those in need, and being compassionate toward those who are hurting.
When we are, we’re not only doing the right thing in the “now,†but we’re sowing something that will bring about a good return in the “then.†So what are you sowing?
For whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. (Galatians 6:7 NKJV)
