A Daily Word - July 7, 2011

"Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.”
Matthew 5:5

Gentleness, or meekness, refers not to wimpiness but to discipline, as in a strong horse under control. There is also another implication. In French, Jesus’ saying could be translated, “Blessed are the debonair.” This describes the person who doesn’t succumb to pettiness, and is above a spiteful, small-spirited attitude. Such disciplined and gracious people may seem pushed aside in the short-term, but at the end of the day, they are the real winners.
